Sarawak United Peoples’ Party – Media Release
by Dato Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew – SUPP Secretary-General
‘2016 – Year of Hope and Dynamic Progress for Sarawakians’
On behalf of SUPP, I would like to extend a very Happy New Year’s greetings to all Sarawakians. The dawn of a New Year is also a time of hope and new beginning. We wish all Sarawakians continued progress and successful endeavours.
We also wish the people of Sarawak stability and peace where all the communities can continue to live side by side, work together and celebrate each other’s festivities as one. This is a unique feature of Sarawakians that we should always work hard to maintain.
In 2016, SUPP has set its sights on firmly ensuring reclamation of Sarawak rights as stated in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and Inter Governmental Committee Report. We hope to see the beginning of a fast paced realignment of Federal and State relationship, which takes into account the Malaysia Agreement 1963, Inter Governmental Committee Report and aspirations of Sarawakians.
SUPP also resolves to work hard to ensure implementations of policies that will improve the quality of our educational system together with enhancement of educational facilities in all the schools. This is something which is very dear and close to the hearts of all Sarawakian parents.
Additionally, SUPP commits itself in 2016, to voice out and lobby for more job creation and entrepreneurship schemes in Sarawak. In order to have continued progress, we need to have more policies and investments that trigger dynamic progress.
One of the ways, to create more jobs and entrepreneurship opportunities in Sarawak is the abolishment of the unfair and unjustifiable Cabotage Policy of the Federal Government.
The Cabotage policy places unnecessary financial burden on Sarawakians by directing all international trade in Malaysia via Port Klang in Peninsular Malaysia. This adds to the cost of imports and exports for Sarawak. It also delays the duration of goods entering and leaving Sarawak.
The removal of the Cabotage Policy will also lower the cost of living in Sarawak while at the same time increase the standard of living for Sarawakians.
The abolition of the Cabotage Policy will have the immediate positive impact in Sarawak. We hope the Federal Government will seriously address this matter. They must adhere to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and Inter Government Committee Report which assure Sarawak of conducting International Trade with other nations directly, thereby making Sarawak businesses better placed to compete in the global market.
Furthermore, SUPP will also lobby the Federal Government to allow direct fights to all airports in Sarawak. This will allow Sarawakians to travel directly to many destinations and also allow tourists to visit our beautiful nation state at a lower cost without going via KLIA.
SUPP has been serving Sarawakians for 56 years and we promise to constantly adapt to the new needs of the people by speaking out and championing Sarawakians at all times.
SUPP will work tirelessly to continue serving and protecting Sarawakians and the rights of our nation state, Sarawak. We know 2016 will be a critical year for Sarawakians and we hope together the right choices are made by all Sarawakians to have a stronger and better Sarawak.
