Financial aid for flood victims
A total of 1,613 families affected by floods last year each received RM500 in financial aid from the government.
Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Senator Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian revealed yesterday that the assistance was distributed by the Kuching District Office.
“However, this will be the last time Kuching District Office handles this matter as the responsibility has been handed to the Malaysia Civil Defence Department (JPAM),” he said after presenting aid to recipients at a brief ceremony in the Civic Centre here.
“JPAM does not only help in rescue mission but also in distributing disaster relief assistance to those affected,” he added.
Dr Sim hopes that the close working relations between government agencies can be continued and improved from time to time.
“It’s very unfortunate that Sarawak is facing the dry season which is unpredictable. As such, we hope the government will improve and develop infrastructure to prevent flooding problems as the weather and haze are out of our control,” he said.
Dr Sim hopes that the small contribution can help alleviate the burden of recipients.
Similar aid will be distributed to victims in Padawan area in the Siburan Community Hall later.
The recipients are those residing in Sekama, Selangan Batu, Beradek, Tabuan Lot, Bintawa Hilir, Panglima Seman, Bintawa Tengah, Bintawa Ulu, Pasir Pandak, Sourabaya Hilir, Gersik, Kpg No.5 and No. 6, Parit Lama, Dagok Barat, Laruh Barat, Temedak Muhibah, Kpg Patinggan, Sungai Maong, Sungai Maong Tengah, Kudei Lama, Kudei Baru, Lada Pedas, Pinang Jawa, Gita Laut, Gita Lama, Gita Baru, Gita Tengah, Taman Mawar, Tengah Sungai, Taman Malihah Fasa 1, Paroh, Sejijak, Sinjan, Tupong Tengah, Tupong Jaya, Rantau Panjang, Desa Ria, Setinggan Desa Ria, Penempatan Semula Desa Wira, Kpg Sinar Budi Baru, Sinar Budi Lama, Kpg Segobang Batu Kawa, Kpg Surih Batu Kawa, Batu Kawa, Batu Kitang Lama and Batu Kitang Jaya.
