A visit to Kampung Pasir, Lutong.
On 4th April 2015 Penghulu Hj Samad Bin Alip, KK Edward Mampu, Adam Yii and Datuk Sebastian Ting visited Encik Kelupu Bin Jenawi and his family at Kampung Pasir, Lutong, where few hundred families have been staying as squatters, some as long as 40 years.
The group brought some food items for Encik Kelupu. He is an disabled person. with his left leg amputated because of severe diabetes. He has applied for welfare assistance and is awaiting for approval. SUPP has contacted the welfare officer and will follow up on his application.
The condition of the inner section of this squatter area are bad. The group have to walk on two small old planks, from the main road to Kelupu’s house. Under the planks the condition of the ground is water logged and muddy .
The houses on both sides are of poor and in dilapidated conditions. Some look they may collapse if there is strong wind. A sad scene and the visitors’ hearts and thoughts are with their children too. The environments are surely not conducive to bringing up children and their education.
SUPP is fully committed and focused to give its best and assist our Chief Minister of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem’s thoughts of having ZERO squatters by 2020, as announced by him on 20th October 2014 and reported on 21st October 2014.
In Miri alone, there are still 3800 families squatting on state and private land.
SUPP will continue to go to the ground and distribute food stuff, cooking oil, milo, sugar, biscuits and others.
If one has not visited a poor squatter area before, the party warmly welcome anyone and their children to join them in their visits and have a first hand experience and understand the true meaning of poverty.
We will then appreciate how lucky we are and be thankful to our parents for their hard work, their love, care and sacrifices.
