SUPP Secretary-General Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew : Sarawak State Assemblymen should be included in the Special Committee of MA 63
State Assemblyman for Piasau, Datuk Sebastian Ting agreed with Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg that the special committee to study on how to implement the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) should also include the State Assemblymen from Sarawak.
Ting who is also SUPP Secretary general said the reason is simply because the Malaysia Agreement is an International Agreement signed on 9 July 1963 between Governments.
“So the question here is who represents the people of Sarawak? It is the State Assemblymen each of whom is sworn to protect and defend our Sarawak Constitution and Sarawak’s interests. They supplement the work of our Members of Parliament. Their duty is to ensure that the rights of every citizen and every partners of the Federation are in accordance to the Federal Constitution and the MA63,” he pointed out.
The special committee, he added, should focus on all measures fulfilling Article VIII of the Malaysia Agreement to ensure complete implementation of all the recommendations of the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report rather than re-negotiating. We are done with the negotiating in 1963. “Just implement what was agreed. In the process, they may have to amend certain laws and policies that eroded the MA63 and the spirit of the Agreement. The initial things that I am looking forward to from the special committee discussion are the return of education autonomy back to Sarawak and our oil and gas resources. These will reinforce and accelerate our economic base for a strong and prosperous future for Sarawak,” he stated.
