Students should do their best but not to forget their roots
Students should equip themselves with relevant skills and knowledge for a better future.
This advice came from Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, who said the population of Southeast Asian countries is about 600 million – half of them are aged 30 years old and below.
Dr Sim urged the young people to equip themselves with skills and knowledge so that they would be able to compete with others.
He said this at the prize presentation of the 11th National Secondary Students Chinese Creative Writing Competition.
Dr Sim said one’s background and place of origin do not matter.
Relating his life story, he said he went to a Chinese primary school, then to a mission secondary school before studying medicine in Australia.
Although he was doing well in Australia for 17 years, he did not forget his home country and decided to return to serve the people. He said setting up Sarawak Heart Centre was meant not only to treat patients, but serve as a place to train cardiologists from other countries.
“When you are successful, do not forget your roots. Contribute back to society,” Dr Sim said.
