Dato Sebastian on the importance of trees in the environment

State Assemblyman for Piasau, Dato Sebastian is encouraging the private sector to be involved and make a difference to the community especially where environment issue is concerned.

Speaking at the tree planting event yesterday morning at Miri Piasau Boat club, Ting pointed out that the event is a significant one as it involved both Government and private sectors to make a better Miri.

He said environment issue is something closed to his heart and meant a lot to him as he is familiar with Piasau Nature reserve and the need to protect the environment.

“Today, we are doing more than just talking, we are taking actions and leading by examples – by planting a tree, we are giving this world a new phase of life..

We have repeatedly talked about our desire to plant trees in order to slow down global warming and restore ecosystems worldwide. These are important benefits of tree planting, but there are other benefits that are much harder to measure but whose impact is no less important.

These are the socioeconomic benefits that trees bring to the communities where they are planted.

For simplicity, let us call these effects the “measurable effects”.

There are broadly three types of measurable effects of trees: those effects that benefit individuals, those that benefit firms, and those that benefit taxpayers (that is both individuals and firms).

For “none measurable effects”, where the nature can give us a sense of serenade calmness, harmony and peace. Trees act as sound barriers to reduce noise pollution. A single tree produces approximately 260 pounds of oxygen per year. That means two mature trees can supply enough oxygen annually to support a family of four,” he added.

Trees also absorb carbon-dioxide. They purify the air. They maintain balance of gases in air. Thus they control air-pollution.

They attract rain. It is very important for our agriculture. Their roots hold the soil together. They prevent soil-erosion and maintain fertility of land. They are the natural habitat of many animals and birds and offer us cool shade during summer. Trees are valuable natural resource. We should conserve them with great care.

He also encouraged children on the importance of taking care of environment and to love them as they would be the one to need it in the future.

Also at the function were day Dayang Enterprise Holdings Berhad: Datuk James Ling, Miri Mayor Adam Yii , Miri Deputy Resident Encik Abdul Aziz  Abang Arabi Abang Aimran Manager, Sarawak Forestry Wan M Shafriza, Manager, Petronas Carigali, Ms Nnene Anochie General Manager, Sarawak Shell Berhad and Jill Chieng General Manager, Sarawak Shell Berhad.
