Lily Yong – shocked by MP’s statement on rapist
Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP), Kuching Branch Chairperson, Datuk Lily was shocked that a Member of Parliament would even consider asking a rape victim to marry the man who raped and took away her innocence.
Lily said it was shocking that in this day and age, there are still men living in medieval era who treated female as an object devoid of feelings. This is really a terrible thing for a man, what more an MP who represented Malaysians, to utter such words. This reflect badly on the image of the Barisan Nasional and to UMNO. The Prime Minister must look into this and ensure that the MP should not stand in the next general election, she said.
Tasek Gelugor MP a former Syariah court judge, Datuk Shabudin Yahaya had said in the Dewan Rakyat Tuesday that there is nothing wrong with a rape victim to marry the rapist as some of 9 year old girl were physically and spiritually ready for marriage.
He was debating on the Sexual offence against Children Bill 2017 and stated that with marriage, the rapist would serve as a remedy and also to curb social problem. He added that this would give the victim a second chance to turn a new leaf in life.
Yong pointed out that the cruel statement from Shabudin showed that he is not aware of the trauma faced by the rape victims and to force her to live with a person who had taken her by force. She said even if there is so-called “consensus” on her part, she would be too young to take on such heavy responsibility meant for an adult. And rapists should know that a rape is a rape and that is a criminal offence.
“For a rapist, justice should be served to him as he has destroyed a young girl childhood. The statement from Shabudin is irresponsible as a leader in BN, he is sending a horrifying message to the younger generation that it is alright to rape as long as you marry the girl. Yes, and after marriage, they would discard the girls like a broken toys or subject them to a life-long misery. Can Shabudin prevented that?
Thus, it is important that MP should think carefully before they speak. In our technology world, what was said would be beamed to the whole world and it is an embarrassment to the PM that he has such poor standard of MP in his team. I think he should apologize and step down. That would be a remedy for women’s feelings that he has hurt,” she added.
