Adam as third mayor of Miri Resort City.

It is with profound humility and great honour that I take this opportunity to thank Sarawak Government, and the Minister for Local Government Datuk Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, and SUPP for my appointment as the third mayor of Miri Resort City.
I realise the heavy responsibility of being the Mayor even as I accept the duty. There is a huge expectation and pressure from the people of Miri to see better services delivery by the City Council. And to provide the proper leadership in further developing Miri to a higher level.
However, I am optimistic about the future of Miri. My optimism is based on the fact that two third of the present batch of councilors are new faces and are relatively young. I believe they will come with new ideas and will be more open minded.
And I know for a fact that our Minister for Local Government, YB Datuk Professor Dr Sim, and his Assistant Minister, YB Datu Dr Panguang will be supportive of our efforts to improve and develop Miri to a higher level.
I will work and coordinate closely with all the YBs within and around Miri. They are Assistant Minister for Tourism, YB Datuk Lee Kim Shim, YB Dato Sebastian Ting, YB Ahmad Lai, YB Datuk Gerawat Gala, YB Ripin and YB Rosey. Not forgetting our Assistant Minister for Local Government, YB Datu Dr Panguang. Together I am sure we can bring great changes to Miri.
Most importantly, I take inspiration and comfort from the leadership of our Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan. His progressive, open, thinking out of the box and no nonsense leadership will be my guiding principles.
I’ll perform to the best of my ability to provide the proper leadership in the City Council. To ensure that the City Council’s services delivery are up to the expectation of the people of Miri.
I do not want to be bogged down by the chronic bureaucratic red tapes in services delivery to the rakyat. New ways of ensuring services delivery will have to be formulated in consultation with my councilors and City Council administration. I know the limitations of the present system that often consider procedures are more important than results.
However, time and people’s expectations have changed. So we need to harmonise the procedures to ensure our ultimate objective of quality services delivery is met. In this endeavour, I expect the full cooperation of my councilors and City Council administration. Together we will overcome the present shortcomings.
I would also like to see the major issues of public concerns in Miri to be dealt with in a holistic manner. Issues like chronic traffic jams in many parts of the city, the indiscriminate parking, the increasing environmental and rubbish pollution woes, security and safety concerns in the city and its outskirts, increase animal cruelty problems, the present squatter dilemma and other similar day to day concerns are to be given priority attention as these directly affect the quality of life in our society in Miri.
It is among my key objectives to ensure Miri Resort City will further develop its tourism potentials. Kota Kinabalu can be our model. And it’s my hope that Miri Resort City will one day soon be as vibrant and dynamic as Kota Kinabalu, if not better. Based on what I have gathered, Miri Resort City is blessed with numerous potential tourist attractions. We have just about the most colourful ethnic diversity in Malaysia. We have Kelabits, Saban, Barawang, Kayans, Keyahs just to name a few lesser known ethnic groups among score of others.
Miri Resort City has good linkages to Mulu Caves which is a world heritage site. To Niah Caves. And Bario which can be a premium highland resort destination. Moreover, Bario is now under Miri Resort City administration. These are some of our tourist assets that we will fully capitalise on.
Therefore, Miri City Council will immediately start to organize and compile all these tourist assets and start to aggressively promote tourism for Miri.
As an enabler towards a step change in service delivery efficiency and enhance tourism, I would like to exploit further on digitization and leverage on information technology in alignment with the latest global trends. This is also in alignment with moving towards paperless culture and contribute to a better and greener environment that we all live in.
Now, to the private sector and people of Miri, I would like to say this. Miri City Council is here to help, facilitate and enable you to do your business, provided it is not illegal, and to make your life better. Miri City Council is not here to hinder or make your business or life difficult.
Miri City Council will endeavour to be engaged with all the stakeholders in this journey to a better Miri.
As I said earlier, I’m optimistic about Miri’s future. I’m sure by working together with all the stakeholders, we will make Miri much better.
So God, give me wisdom, courage and strength to do the right thing.
Thank you.
