Datuk Sebastian Ting Says Caring for the Elderly is Caring for Our Roots

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, Datuk Sebastian Ting urged society to continue caring for the elderly, saying such acts reflect the warmth and compassion that define a caring community.

He said true progress is not measured only by economic growth but also by the kindness and mutual support shared among people. “Caring for the elderly is caring for our roots. It is about respecting life and the value of experience,” he said.

Speaking at the “Mooncake Mid-Autumn Festival with Silver Companions” charity event hosted by the Miri Community Care Team at the Miri Home for the Aged, Chen highlighted that the Mid-Autumn Festival symbolises reunion and warmth. The celebration, he added, not only brought joy to the elderly but also showcased the community’s charitable spirit.

“This is an expression of social responsibility. Through the efforts of volunteers, the importance of caring for the elderly is made visible, encouraging more people to contribute to charity and help build a loving and compassionate community,” he said.

Ting also noted the participation of children who, accompanied by their parents during the school holidays, joined as “little volunteers”, reflecting the value of family education and social responsibility.

He thanked the community care team and volunteers for their dedicated services to the elderly, including haircuts, nail trimming, massages and shared meals. Such gestures, he said, reflect the spirit of unity and solidarity within the community.

Chen encouraged the team to continue spreading kindness and care to more people in need and wished the elderly good health and happiness.
