Miri City Council receives Public Service Excellence award

Miri City Council (MCC) has received the Public Service Excellence Recognition from the Waste Management Association of Malaysia (WMAM) at the WMAM Recognition Awards 2026.

Miri Mayor Adam Yii said the recognition, presented during the WMAM Annual Conference 2026 at the Genting International Convention Centre, Pahang on Aug 10, acknowledged MCC’s continuous efforts to strengthen waste management, environmental sustainability and municipal service delivery.

He said the recognition reflected the collective commitment and teamwork of MCC councillors, management and employees in improving services for the people of Miri.

Among the council’s initiatives are community waste buy-back and recycling programmes, including the Miri City Buy-Back Campaign, “Waste to Wealth”, green hubs and pilot programmes promoting household and commercial waste separation, e-waste recovery and recyclable collection.

MCC has also incorporated the Sustainable Development Goals into its municipal planning and community programmes through initiatives such as household composting, plastic reduction campaigns, environmental awareness and river conservation.

Yii said MCC also adopts a long-term approach to waste management planning, including policies, programmes and infrastructure aimed at supporting resource recovery and circular economy objectives.

The council is also strengthening its waste management system through proactive planning, risk management and adaptive operational strategies to better respond to urbanisation, environmental challenges and future waste management demands.

Yii said the recognition should not be viewed merely as an achievement, but as a responsibility and motivation for MCC to continue improving its services.

“As Miri continues to grow and public expectations evolve, MCC remains committed to strengthening service delivery and embracing more efficient, innovative and sustainable approaches,” he said.

He added that the council would continue working with government agencies, industry partners, businesses and the community towards building a cleaner, healthier, more liveable and sustainable Miri.

Yii also expressed appreciation to WMAM for the recognition and for providing a platform to promote knowledge sharing, good practices and innovation in waste management and environmental services.
