Sebastian Ting assists family in obtaining Malaysian citizenship after three-year wait
Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting has assisted a family in Miri to resolve their citizenship status after more than three years of applications and waiting.
Ting said the family comprising 25-year-old Wu Zhi Kang, his 23-year-old wife Mona Juri, and their two children, eight-year-old Wu En Wei and three-year-old Wu En Ying, had finally been granted Malaysian citizenship and issued MyKad.
He said Mona, who was born in 1997, had been unable to obtain a MyKad or be recognised as a Sarawakian due to incomplete birth and identity documents.
“Mona participated in the special task force programme on statelessness held at the Miri Civil Centre in November 2023. From then on, we assisted her with the citizenship and identity application process,” he said.
Ting said Wu had initially contacted him via WhatsApp seeking assistance, after which the case was referred to his service team for follow-up.
“After more than three years of the application process, Mona and her two children have finally been granted citizenship and issued their MyKad,” he said.
Wu expressed his appreciation to Ting and his team for assisting the family throughout the application process.
He said resolving the citizenship issue had brought great relief, particularly as the children could now attend school and receive an education.
Ting said the establishment of the Sarawak Citizenship Special Committee and Special Task Force would help more people facing citizenship issues due to incomplete birth and identity documents.
He said the Sarawak Citizenship Special Task Force, coordinated on behalf of the Sarawak Government by Women, Children and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, was making good progress.
“Citizenship is extremely important to an individual. Without citizenship, a person faces many difficulties in daily life and restrictions in areas such as travelling abroad, applying for a passport and receiving education,” he said.
