SUPP CENTRAL YOUTH PRESS STATEMENT 17/06/2014
SUPP Youth Central is very concerned with the 2013 Auditor General Report that two long houses in the interior was denied treated water supply although the facility was completed two years earlier. The RM1.46 million Rumah Sebeliau Geliung projects was supposed to channel clean treated water to the residents and had been completed in April 2011 but the residents were still using rain water, gravity pipe and the river for their daily needs when the audit team visited them in August 2013.
The audit team from the Auditor General also found unsatisfactory construction work in Sarawak’s rural water supply project, such as leaks in water tanks, exposed 300mm high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes and poor quality intake. The audit also made a finding that the lack of enforcement from the Rural Development Ministry at both the federal and state levels as well as from the consultants contributed to the less than satisfactory work.
SUPP Youth Secretary General Wilfred Yap demands that action shall be taken by the Government against the parties responsible for the predicament faced by the residents of the two long houses based on the Auditor General’s report as the Government being elected by the people must ensure that public funds are prudently spent, that is, without wastage and extravagance and getting best value for the money spent.
A total of 230 recommendations have also been made in the Auditor General 2013 with 55 suggestions made to the federal Government, 31 to federal statutory bodies and 144 to state governments.
SUPP Youth Secretary General Wilfred Yap hopes that both the state and federal government will take proactive steps in ensuring that all the weakness highlighted by the Auditor General in his 2013 report will be taken seriously and further that the recommendations made by the Auditor General will be implemented to ensure that all objectives of programmes or activities and projects have been met.
