SUPP potential candidates

There was no announcement yet on the potential candidates in Kuching Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) branch yesterday when President of the party, Senator Datuk Dr. Sim Kui Hian paid a Chinese New Year visit there.

When asked, Dr. Sim said there were three names given to him and they were not ready to announce the candidate yet. He said the name will be announced soon.

It was believed that the names were that of branch treasurer Goh Leng Yew who is a businessman, Vice chairman, Peter Pui and Peter Pau in charge of publicity. All three are businessmen.

However, Dr. Sim hinted that the candidate is likely to be from the youth section as they had emphasised on wanting more youngsters.

He said that he could not put his own name in as he is in Batu Kitang and Batu Lintang potential seat already.

Saying that the party need more youth, Dr. Sim expressed his gladness that there are more youths joining the party and they have amended the constituency to limit the terms.

“In the past, the people perceived us as an old party as the older leaders felt that the youth were not experienced enough, they have no money and they were not ready to take over. Thus the old members never dare to let go. This is changing. We want the younger generation to be groomed and to take over,” he added.

He said the Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem’s team will be one of the young and vibrant from SUPP.

Earlier on in his speech, Dr. Sim said he believed in working for the people to be accepted and not the other way round. He said in SUPP now, the party is no longer known as a ‘towkay’ party but one who must go out to serve the people.
