SUPP helping the poor
SUPP is assisting about 10 to 20 hard core people every week in Welfare aid.
President of SUPP, Senator Datuk Dr. Sim Kui Hian who was giving away angpow and goodies to 20 hard core poor yesterday at the SUPP headquarters said the party’s Central Woman Welfare Section has started the welfare aid a few years ago.
He said the Welfare section would go to hard core poor families to distribute monthly food aid. And every week, they would drive new applicants to the Welfare department to be registered. There they would help them fill out forms and translate for the Welfare personnel as many did not know how to speak English or Malay.
Dr. Sim said this was part of the on going assistance that the party had introduced. “Normally, our people would go to the ground to distribute the food and goodies and today, it is a symbolic gesture as some did indicate they want to be at the party headquarters,” he added.
Pleased that his people had gone to the ground to service them, Dr. Sim said this is how things should be done. “We must stay close to the people and by doing so, we can relate to them. This is done in the spirit of SUPP as what our forefathers had been doing,” he said.
Besides Kuching, the Welfare section was set up in all SUPP branches. “On whether the applicants can get the welfare aid or not from the government, he said that was subject to the Welfare department who will interview the deserving people. Most of those who asked for assistance in Kuching city are Chinese.
Dr. Sim said due to the depreciation of the ringgit, the GST and the increasing price of goods, he understands the hardship the people are facing daily.
