More Autonomy for Sarawak
Sarawak United Peoples’ Party – Media Statement by YB Senator Datuk Dr. Sim Kui Hian – President Sarawak United Peoples’ Party.
“SUPP pledges to continue asking for more Autonomy for Sarawak”
Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) is indeed very happy with the announcement by our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s pledge that there will be more development funds and autonomy for Sarawak.
This pledge to give more autonomy for Sarawak is a very important start and is fully aligned to SUPP’s original vision of Sarawak for Sarawakians ideology.
Once Sarawak gains more authority over its own affairs, we can plan and implement our development policies by utilising our own unique Sarawak management model which is focused on the present and future needs of Sarawakians.
SUPP has since its inception in 1959 steadfastly supported the Sarawak for Sarawakians ideology. Therefore, the statement by our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak that the Chief Secretary to the Government of Malaysia, Tan Sri Dr. Ali Hamsa and our Sarawak State Secretary, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Morshidi bin Abdul Ghani had already begun discussions to determine “what form of empowerment that we can return to the states” is most welcomed.
We hope both of them make our desire for additional autonomy a priority and that they start rolling out and implementing the areas of empowerment that can be returned to Sarawak as soon as possible.
Our Chief Minister YAB Adenan Satem, promised the people of Sarawak that he will negotiate for more devolution of power to Sarawak and the announcement by the Prime Minister is evidence that he keeps his promises.
SUPP is also happy with the quick response by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to Chief Minister YAB Adenan Satem’s request. This shows the Prime Minister has made this wise decision due to his understanding of Sarawakians needs because of his frequent visits to Sarawak. We look forward to even more contributions and development for Sarawak.
All Sarawakians, irrespective of their race, are concerned and care about the autonomy of our State as they believe more autonomy will enable formulation of better developmental policies, thereby leading to better basic facilities and further improvement to the living standards of the people.
SUPP also believes that in order to gain more autonomy for Sarawak it is not necessary to take radical and unnecessary aggressive action. We can benefit and achieve twice as much by a process clear communications, negotiations, discussions and internal consultations with our counterparts.
SUPP has worked with Barisan National for 42 years and shoulders the national responsibility of bringing and maintaining peace, progress and prosperity to its people. Our responsibility, political position and allegiance has never wavered, be it during good times or tough times. SUPP will always defend and pay great attention to the autonomy of Sarawak and never change its position.
We will forge ahead and continue our mission of more autonomy for Sarawak and always pursue the ideology of Sarawak for Sarawakians via the “SUPP for Sarawak” concept.
