Sarawak Plans to Build 20,000 Affordable Homes under 13th Malaysia Plan
Sarawak Deputy Premier and Minister of Public Health, Local Government and Housing, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian announced that Sarawak plans to build up to 20,000 affordable housing units under the upcoming 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13), set to begin next year.
He said the move aims to accelerate the improvement of living standards and drive socio-economic growth across the state.
“Under the 13th Malaysia Plan, we have planned to construct around 20,000 affordable housing units,” Dr Sim said during the Sarawak Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Board Appointment and Letter of Appreciation Ceremony for the 2025–2027 term held yesterday.
Dr Sim noted that from 2021 to this year, only 3,500 affordable housing units were planned under the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK-12). Therefore, the state government intends to significantly expand housing development in the next phase to ensure more middle and lower-income families benefit.
He emphasised that the initiative is a key measure to enhance Sarawak’s development and the well-being of its people while supporting the goals of the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) by providing more Sarawakians with stable and affordable homes.
At the ceremony, Mambong assemblyman Abdul Yakub Arbi was appointed as Chairman of HDC, while the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dato Laura Lee Elizabeth, was named Deputy Chairperson.
Other board members include Meluan assemblyman Dato Roland Duat Jubin, Bukit Begunan assemblyman Dato Mong Dagang, Marudi assemblyman Dato Dr Penguang Manggil, and Lingga assemblywoman Dato Norah Awang Sohot.
Also serving on the board are Sarawak Financial Secretary Dato Sri Wan Lizozman, Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development Dato Abdul Razak Julaihi, and Director of the Land and Survey Department Dato Awang Zamhari Awang Mahmud.
