Dr Sim: SGH needs more blood donors
Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) needs an average of 250 blood donors daily to meet the needs of the hospital to save lives.
Speaking at the Blood Donors Appreciation ceremony at Boulevard shopping mall yesterday, Dr. Sim said with a population of 750,000 in Kuching, it is not difficult to achieve the number of 250.
However, he said it is a matter of will and the people’s civic consciousness to do it. He called to the people to come forward to save lives.
Dr. Sim urged the younger generation to start giving blood donation so that they will contribute to maintain healthy blood for use at the Blood bank.
He said the youngsters could go with friends as it takes three persons’ blood to save a life and be proud of what they are doing.
He revealed that SGH spent RM100,000 per month to process blood so as to obtain quality and healthy blood for use and maintain its Blood Bank.
The entire procedure from pre-screening to laboratory test to ensure the blood is good for transfusion cost around RM200.
He congratulated the blood donors for their enormous contribution to sustain the city’s blood supply and giving the gift of love which has given an opportunity for others to live.
