Assault, harassment of a student in a local vocational institute
SUPP Public Complaints Bureau (SUPP PCB) Chief, Wilfred Yap was worried that a student may be a victim of physical assault and called on the authorities concerned to have a proper investigation.
Yap was recently approached by a student of a local vocational learning institute who claimed that he was physically slapped and verbally harassed by a lecturer without any proper justification. Fearing for his own safety, the student had lodged a police report on the matter.
SUPP PCB’s stand on the matter is that aggressive physical intervention should never be used as a substitute for good behavioural management in any institution of learning and that it is illegal to victimize or physically assault or harass a student.
Yap have now written to the institution concerned for a proper investigation to be carried out urgently and will continue to monitor the situation to ensure that the student is not unfairly treated.
