Totally condemn statement that rape victims obtain good life if they marry their rapist
SUPP Central Wanita Chairwoman, Datin Jennifer William strongly condemned a statement by Tasik Gelugor MP, Datuk Shabudin Yahaya’s alleged statement on child raped victims can obtain good life if they marry their rapist.
Datin Jennifer strongly disagrees with such provoking statement, saying that it is insulting and disrespectful to women. “Rape is the worst sexual abuse that can be inflicted on women and children. It is heinous and brutal. To say to have a good life by marrying your rapist is insulting and degrading.”
Furthermore, she added, such statement is against the Government’s prerogative in protecting rights of women and children in the country and SUPP Central Wanita urged the Government to take more proactive role in criminalising parties that disrespects women and children be it individually or parties. This is in-line with SUPP Central Wanita’s support against rape and sexual abuse/assault towards women and children.
In view of child marriages, Jennifer affirms that child marriages is not the way to legitimize sexual advances and claims on children or minors. According to her, individuals or groups like Shabudin should have firm grasp on the concept (of child marriages) and context before issuing such provocative and offensive statement.
What is more shocking, according to Jennifer is the role of habitual rapists to their victim(s). Looking into Shabudin’scontext, Jennifer adds that this insinuation is morally and ethically wrong if girls were to marry their rapist who are of their own family members, i.e.: their father, brother, uncle and grandfather, let alone strangers. “It disgust me that such rape occurs within the family circle. It disgusts me more if it is suggested that rape victims should marry their rapist in order to have ‘good life’. This kind of marriage cannot be justified. It is not right at all,” Jennifer said.
Jennifer asserted that SUPP Central Wanita stands on its own principle against sexual abuse/assault to women and children. She also calls for Shabudin to reflect and apologise publicly for such offensive statement.
