Samarahan District Council (SDC) elevated into a Municipal Council
The Samarahan District Council (SDC) has been elevated into a Municipal Council, announced the Minister of Local Government Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, because it had all the ingredients needed to be upgraded.
Kota Samarahan actually represented many opportunities for the local government to do something it could be proud of.
This is the place of a blue ocean economy because of its status as a hub for higher education.
“There are over 17,000 students and over 2,000 lecturers in Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) and over 10,000 students and lecturers in Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).
“This is a university town and therefore there is a university economics with the more than 30,000 students within its jurisdiction,” he said at the launch of Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (KSMC) in Kota Samarahan recently.
Apart from the two universities, Dr Sim said Kota Samarahan also had Intan and the Institut Pendidikan Guru Tun Abdul Razak Campus, among others, in the municipality.
