Gawai celebration as a tourist attraction
State Assemblyman for Batu Kitang, Lo Khere Chiang said Gawai celebration can be sold as a tourism product to earn income for the villagers.
Speaking at the closing of the Bidayu community at Kampung Tematu on Saturday night, Lo said the celebration of Gawai is rich in culture and could not be found anywhere else in the world.
He said the organisers can contact the hotels and invite tourists to celebrate Gawai with them for a fee which could be used to help the kampung for the activities.
Lo suggested that before the celebration next year, they can approach the hotels and made arrangement for tourists to view for themselves the rich culture they have. “It will be a memorable time for the tourists and can put Padawan in the map of tourism,” he added.
There was cultural dance during the night and a beauty pagent.
Lo also urged the young Dayak to chase after their dreams by working hard to pursue it.
He said the Dayak community has contributed a lot to Sarawak as there are now doctors, engineers, architects besides other professionals among the community.
