Dato sebastian: Recognition of UEC Proof of More Autonomy
Sarawak United Peoples’ Party – Media Release by Dato Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew – SUPP Secretary General
Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) whole heartedly applauds our Chief Minister YAB Adenan Satem and the Sarawak Government when they created history in Sarawak and more so in Malaysia with their progressive and enlightening approach by recognising the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) qualifications.
It was a very momentous occasion when YB Senator Datuk Dr Sim Hui Kian, President of Sarawak United Peoples’ Party made this announcement yesterday at SUPP Headquarters.
This historic and milestone decision was announced in the presence of United Chinese School Committees Association of Malaysia (UCSCAM) (Dong Zong) Chairman Datuk Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau, Secretary General of SUPP Dato Sebastian Ting, Dong Zong Secretary General Poh Chin Chuan, Sarawak United Association of Private Chinese Secondary School Management Board vice Chairman Richard Wee, Datuk Matthew Chen, Adam Yii, Sih Hua Tong, Jonathan Chai and others.
The Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) is a standardised test for Chinese independent high school students organised by Dong Zong, the United Chinese School Committees Association of Malaysia (UCSCAM) since 1975.
This recognition allows UEC graduates with a BM credit in SPM to apply for government jobs; obtain loans and scholarships from Yayasan Sarawak; apply to study at UNIMAS pending the final agreement of the technical aspects; continue to apply to study at Swinburne University Kuching, Curtin University Miri, UCTS, Sibu and also to continue applying to local teaching colleges to be trained as Teachers, as is presently the case.
We are pleased to have played an instrumental role in this historic event whereby Sarawak has empowered itself on a very important educational matter close to the hearts of many parents and students.
The feeling and sentiment is good on the ground and indeed the People, particular the Chinese Educators and Chinese Community of Sarawak are very happy and are extremely grateful to the Right Honorable Chief Minister of Sarawak, YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan for this wonderful news by recognising the UEC qualifications.
The collaborative effort and team work between our Chief Minister, YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan, the State Government, SUPP, Dong Zong and Sarawak United Association of Private Chinese Secondary School Management Board shows that all the parties involved were solution oriented and worked well together.
The decision enables many UEC qualified Sarawakians to stay on and contribute towards our States development and progress.
The Chinese Independent High Schools are open to all races and religions. They provide a very high standard of education which is recognised worldwide by institutions of higher education.
SUPP also strongly urges and recommends all the other states in Malaysia to follow the lead of our Chief Minister and State Government to recognise UEC as it will bring many benefits to Malaysia and enhance the concept of 1 Malaysia.
We sincerely thank Datuk Temenggong Vincent Lau, Mr Richard Wee and Mr Jonathan Chai, who are advisors to SUPP UEC Task Force, led by Mr Ding Kuong Hing, Treasurer of SUPP for their strong technical support and guidance during this challenging but wonderful and productive journey of ours.
We will continue to seek their expertise and guidance so that together we can get the best for our children, not only studying in Chinese Schools but in all matters pertaining to education.
We have received many messages of thanks and appreciation. We are very thankful to all our well-wishers, our fellow Sarawakians, Chinese School Boards, NGOS, all our dear friends for their continuous support, warm words of encouragement and powerful prayers.
The recognition of UEC proves our slogan “SUPP for Sarawakians” has meaning and impact. We will continue to work hard for Sarawak on many other important issues to further improve the standards and conditions for Sarawakians.
