Third Miri Division Chinese Primary Schools Moral Storytelling Competition Awards Ceremony

Sarawak Deputy Minister of Tourism Datuk Sebastian Ting said moral education is not merely about pursuing good academic results, but more importantly, about helping children learn to conduct themselves, respect others, take responsibility, and be grateful to their parents and teachers while acquiring knowledge.

He said a knowledgeable person could move fast, but a person with good character could go further and more steadily.

Ting said this when attending the Third Miri Division Chinese Primary Schools Moral Storytelling Competition Awards Ceremony organised by the Miri Moral and Cultural Association at Boulevard Shopping Mall, where he officiated the prize presentation.

He added that storytelling competition was not merely a contest of language skills or stage performance, but an important activity promoting values, character development and cultural heritage.

Pointing out that participating children conveyed positive values such as honesty, kindness, respect, responsibility, gratitude and courage through their stories that are important foundations for their growth and values needed by society.

“Regardless of whether you receive an award today, you are already winners because you had the courage to stand on stage, face an audience and express yourselves. This courage and confidence are extremely valuable,” he said.

He said trophies and certificates were forms of recognition, but the values, communication skills and personal breakthroughs that students gained during the preparation process were the most valuable rewards.

Stories, he said, were a powerful form of expression, as a good story could touch people’s hearts and inspire them to make better choices.

“Although the stories told by the students today may only last a few minutes, the lessons they convey could influence them for the rest of their lives,” he added.

Ting hoped the competition would continue to grow, attract more schools and students, and gradually encourage the promotion of moral education through different languages and formats.
