The passing on of former MP Kuching, Sim Kwang Yang
Former MP for Kuching(DAP) Sim Kwang Yang passed away yesterday morning in Kuala Lumpur.
Aged 66, Sim was first elected as MP for Bandar Kuching in 1982 until 1995.
The former MP, who graduated from Canada, was then in Sarawak for his holidays and was persuaded to join the DAP. DAP Kuching branch was subsequently formed and he was elected its Secretary. He later stood against SUPP President, Stephen Yong who was also the then Deputy Chief Minister and won his first term.
Sim moved to KL following his loss and departure from active local politics and become a columnist for an online news portal. He was also the founder of the Hornbill unleashed.
Tan Sri James Masing, PRS President said he was sorry to hear of Sim’s passing. He said even though they crossed swords on many occasions, Sarawak has lost a caring politician who genuinely cared for his voters. He was indeed a friend from the across the political divide.
SUPP Secretary General, Dato’ Sebastian Ting, said he had known Sim even during his secondary school days in St. Joseph.
“He was a school perfect and very involved in sport activities too. His demise is a loss to Sarawak as he is one of the moderate Opposition who gave constructive criticism. My condolence to his family,” said Ting.
Sim’s remains will be cremated at the Nirvana Memorial Park in Selangor Friday afternoon.
