World Tourism Day 2025 In Miri
The World Tourism Day 2025 celebration in Miri highlighted Sarawak’s commitment to strengthening responsible tourism and sustainable development, said Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sebastian Ting.
Ting said the WTD 2025 theme, Tourism and Sustainable Transformation, aligns with Sarawak’s aspiration to build an inclusive, responsible and sustainable tourism sector.
He said the state government ensures that local communities remain at the forefront of sustainable tourism development through education, research and strategic collaboration with academic institutions and regional partners.
Ting delivered the speech on behalf of Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts and Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah at the launching ceremony at Skylark 3 102, Curtin University Malaysia.
At the same event, he announced that Miri has been chosen to host the International Conference on Responsible Tourism and Hospitality 2026 which will be held from 6 to 11 July 2026.
Meanwhile, Miri Mayor and Pujut assemblyman, Adam Yii Siew Sang, described the city as the Northern Gateway of Sarawak which is emerging as a leading tourism destination known for heritage, nature and rapid development.
He said Sarawak received nearly two million visitors from January to May 2025 while Miri recorded an average hotel occupancy rate of around 55 percent this year, indicating improving tourist confidence.
The WTD 2025 celebration was organised by the Sarawak Research Society with Curtin University Malaysia and Responsible Borneo. The event featured the Sustainable Business and AI Bootcamp which included entrepreneurship talks, artificial intelligence workshops and forums on sustainable agriculture and agro tourism.
The highlights included tourism presentations, the launch of JRTM 2025 and a forum on Sustainable Farming and Agrotourism with experts from Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei.
The event ended with the Umami Sundowner Hi Tea featuring local gastronomy as part of a sustainable and cultural tourism experience.

The celebration organised by the Sarawak Research Society with Curtin University Malaysia and Responsible Borneo included an AI and sustainable business bootcamp, tourism presentations and forums on sustainable farming and agrotourism.
