Yap Calls for Professionalism from Sarawak Metro in ART Project Implementation

Kota Sentosa State assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin has reaffirmed his full support for the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project, describing it as a visionary initiative by the Sarawak Government that will modernise public transport and enhance urban mobility.

Praising Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s leadership, Yap said the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) project demonstrates the State Government’s commitment to sustainable, long-term infrastructure development that will benefit the people of Kuching.

However, he also raised serious concerns over complaints from Taman Stutong Indah residents about the conduct of contractors under Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd, the company managing the project.

“Allegations such as requesting to use private electricity and failure to provide clear, timely communication are unacceptable,” said Yap. “Sarawak Metro must not allow its actions or lack thereof to damage the reputation of the GPS-led government.”

Yap stressed that efficient and responsible project management involves early stakeholder engagement, proactive risk assessment, and effective communication—not just during crises but from the outset.

He urged Sarawak Metro to raise its standards and be proactive in dealing with community concerns. “Residents deserve respect, not to be treated as an afterthought,” he said.

Yap said he will continue to monitor the project closely and called on Sarawak Metro to take corrective measures to rebuild public trust and ensure the project is executed professionally and in a people-centric manner.
