Wilfred Yap Says DAP should Be Held Accountable For Late Teoh Beng Hock
Kota Sentosa State assemblyman Wilfred Yap has called out the Democratic Action Party (DAP) over what he described as a failure to deliver justice for the late Teoh Beng Hock, despite holding power in the federal government.
Referring to the recent public apology issued by DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke to Teoh’s family, Yap said that while the gesture may appear sincere, it rings hollow without concrete action.
“Now that DAP holds Cabinet positions and wields real power, an apology alone is meaningless without follow-through. Justice demands results, not rhetoric,” he said in a statement.
Teoh, a political aide, died in 2009 while in the custody of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), sparking widespread outrage and long-standing calls for justice.
Yap criticised DAP for previously using Teoh’s death as a political rallying point during campaigns, including in Sarawak, where he said DAP leaders repeatedly referenced the case in speeches and banners to galvanise public support.
“They used his death to paint themselves as defenders of justice. But now that they’re in power, the loudest voices have gone quiet,” he said.
He questioned what DAP has done since forming the federal government to revisit or act on the case, and whether any meaningful institutional reforms have been implemented to prevent similar tragedies.
“If DAP cannot even fight for justice for one of their own, how can the rakyat trust them to stand up for ordinary Malaysians?” he asked.
Calling the situation not just a political failure but a “moral betrayal,” Yap urged DAP to clearly outline the steps they have taken to pursue justice for Teoh, disclose any reforms within MACC or related agencies, and stop using apologies as a way to deflect accountability.
