Wilfred Yap Supports Growth of Chess Among Youths with RM5,000 Grant
Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap has extended his support to the Sarawak Chess Association with a Minor Rural Project (MRP) grant of RM5,000 to aid in its efforts to promote and develop the game throughout the state.
Yap, who personally handed over the contribution to the association’s president, Abang Reduan, said he firmly believes that sports especially mind sports like chess, play a vital role in shaping young people’s character and thinking skills.
“Chess helps build discipline, encourages strategic thinking, and strengthens the mental resilience of our youth,” he said during a brief handover ceremony. “These are skills that will serve them well, not just in the game, but in life.”
He also praised the association’s continued dedication to nurturing young talent and pledged his ongoing support for grassroots sports development.
“Investing in sports is investing in our future. It brings communities together, instills pride, and helps young people grow into confident, capable individuals,” he added.
Yap said he looks forward to working closely with local sports groups to ensure they have the support and resources they need to thrive.
