MBKS Pickleball Training Gains Momentum as Dr Sim Lauds Community Involvement

The MBKS Community Pickleball Training Month, which runs from July 1 to July 31, 2025, is drawing strong participation from Kuching South residents. Free training sessions are being held every Saturday at Picklepro Kuching, Tabuan Laru Family Club, as part of an initiative to promote healthy living and an active lifestyle through the increasingly popular sport of pickleball.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who visited the training session this morning together with Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, commended the enthusiastic turnout and community spirit displayed by the participants.

“Regular exercise is one of the most important ways to stay healthy and prevent illness. I’m happy to see so many residents joining the training,” said Dr Sim.

He noted that the weekly pickleball sessions offer more than just physical health benefits.

“These activities encourage a healthy lifestyle. It’s heartening to see how this initiative is fostering community bonding. I hope even more residents will take part,” he said.

As of now, 168 participants have registered for the training, with more still signing up—an indication of the sport’s growing popularity.

“The strong response shows that pickleball has quickly become a trend in Kuching,” Dr Sim observed.

In response to the rising interest, he also revealed that plans are being considered to expand pickleball infrastructure in the city.

“We are looking into developing more courts to meet the demand. Providing the right facilities is crucial in supporting an active lifestyle,” he added.

Dr Sim also expressed his appreciation to MBKS for organising the community-focused programme.

“I want to commend MBKS for initiating and running this event. It’s a great effort to create more opportunities for residents to stay active and healthy,” he said.

Participants of the ongoing training sessions are also gearing up for the upcoming Kuching Festival Mayor’s Pickleball Championship, which will be held on August 2 and 3. The competition will feature categories such as Women’s Doubles Open, Men’s Doubles Open, Mixed Doubles Open, and Veteran Men’s Doubles Open.

Attractive prizes including cash rewards, sports gear, medals, trophies, and certificates await the winners.

“This championship will serve as a valuable platform to promote sportsmanship, strengthen community ties, and showcase our local talent,” said Dr Sim.
