Dr Sim warns of Delta variant in the midst of Sarawak, calls to all to follow SOPs
Sarawak is surrounded by a tsunami of Delta variant from West Malaysia and Kalimantan Indonesiaand it has taken over as predominant strains of COVID19 in Kuching after landed in Sarawak from West Malaysia and Kalimantan in June.
He said as of midnight on July 28, Delta variant cases have been detected in Kampung Seratau.
Dr Sim who is State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) advisor said the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) which was already declared and supposed to end on Thursday was extended.
There were eight cases of covid 19 positive reported in Kampung Seratau on July 14 and two days later, 39 cases was detected. Dr. Sim said by July 16, a total of 145 cases has been reported.
Dr Sim, who is also Minister for Local Government and Housing, said out of 96 of the 362 positive cases on Wednesday were found to have completed their double-dose vaccination. He said 54 individuals had received their first dose, 26 have not been vaccinated, 77 were not eligible for vaccination and the status of another 108 have yet to be determined
Delta, he added, is responsible for the surge of numbers as in some cases hospital system to near collapse and number of deaths in Malaysia, Indonesia and worldwide because of more infectious and longer incubation.
In Sarawak, Dr. Sim said the state had managed to achieve 82.5% Dose 1 and 60.1% Dose 2. Similar to UK experience, despite increase in number of cases around Kuching, those who are infected recently are in Category 1 (no symptoms) and Category 2 (mild symptoms). This explains decrease in Sarawak death rates, category 5 (ICU intubated on ventilator), category 4 (require oxygen) and category 3 (x ray changes of the lung).
He said despite all these, they are still on high alert (PCR tests, trace) and stop the transmission (isolate, EMCO/PKPD). “Virus will continue to mutate with new variants emerging. We in Sarawak will need to continuously changing also to adapt, to live with the virus for awhile till our surroundings are under control. Let’s all of us play our role, do our parts”, he added.
