Wilfred Yap calls for a spirit of patriotism
Sentosa SUPP Chairman, Wilfred Yap urged all Malaysians not to forget the multi-cultural and multi-religious fabric of our Malaysian society as it is through harmony and understanding among the various races that binds us all together as one people.
He said it is indeed sad that while Sarawakians have been embracing diversity and harmony in race and religion, politicians from Malaya continue to play up issues on race and religion which is definitely not conducive to the unity of a Nation.
Malaysia is multi-cultural, multi-lingual and multi-religious. Vernacular schooling system was introduced to promote the languages and cultural values of these communities. There is strength in diversity and we should embrace this diversity as a platform for unity building among the diverse races of our nation.
He hit out at Bersatu Youth Chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal who wanted vernacular schools abolished as it served as a hindrance to unity among Malaysians. National unity is not a simple matter that can be derived by closing down vernacular schools.
“Instead of continuously harping on vernacular schools being a hindrance to unity, the focus should be placed on making national schools the preferred choice for all. It is the Government’s duty to make national schools acceptable to every parent for their child and it starts by having the political will to improve the quality of education in present government schools.
Lastly, vernacular schools are definitely not a hindrance to unity. Racism and religious extremism are the root cause of disunity, not vernacular schools. The real stumbling block to unity is race based and race bias policies and we must all strive for the day where the focus of every government policy should be based on meritocracy and social justice, ” he said.
As we commemorate our National Day this year with the theme MERDEKA PRIHATIN (Malaysia Cares), Yap said let us all strive to enhance a spirit of patriotism and love for our country and recommit ourselves to further develop and strengthen the unity and understanding between the races with trust and respect for one another.
Inconjunction with the celebration of our National Day, SUPP Public Complaints Bureau Chief & Kota Sentosa Branch Chairman, Wilfred Yap would like to wish every Malaysian “Happy Merdeka”.
