We are proud to be Sarawakians, says Adam Yii

As Sarawakians, we are shocked and dismayed when Pasir Salak MP Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman mentioned in Parliament that Malaysia is Tanah Melayu, and it is obvious that he has taken Malaya as Malaysia or Malaysia as Malaya. And we would like to remind him that there would be NO Malaysia without Sarawak, but without Malaysia, there is still Sarawak, said Mayor Miri Adam Yii.

“The fact is Sarawak is Fairland Sarawak and we are one of the 4 political entities, namely Federation of Malaya, Singapore, North Borneo (Sabah) and Sarawak that formed Malaysia as equal partners in September 16, 1963.

As far as we are concerned, the following 2 dates are of importance to us. The more important of the two is July 22, 1963 – the day Sarawak was granted self government and is considered to be de facto Sarawak Independence, and is now gazetted as Sarawak Independence Day and a public holiday. The second date is Malaysia Day when the Federation of Malaysia was formed on September 16th, 1963, ” he added.

Furthermore, Yii said SUPP totally disagreed with the police actions to confiscate the Sarawak Crown Flags during Sarawak Independence Day celebration on July 22nd because it is part and parcel of Sarawak history and heritage. The Sarawak history and heritage are ought to be respected and not criminalized, he stated.
