JAIS insensitive – Dato Sebastian on religious harmony

SUPP Publicity Chief, Dato’ Sebastian Ting reacted with horror and disbelief on the action of the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (JAIS) who raided a Hindu wedding and snatched the bride-to-be,  Zarena Abdul Majid, midway through her Hindu wedding rituals in Shah Alam on Sunday ( 1st June 2014).

A wedding is such an important occasion and a raid by JAIS officers clearly showed that they were insensitive to the feelings of non Muslims when they raided and took away the bride to be.

Zarena said that she was a practising Hindu although her father had converted to Islam when she and other siblings were children, 25 years ago. Zarena was then only 7 years old.

The whole nation Malaysia must be shocked by this action by JAIS officers. Their actions are insensitive, irresponsible and totally unacceptable.

Ting said the right thing must be done immediately and an apology should be extended to Zarena, her husband-to-be and both their families. In addition, they must apologise to the Indian community at large.

“Only a few months ago, the same JAIS Selangor created front page news when they raided a Church and took away over 300 Bibles, containing the word “Allah”. These holy Bibles are still being detained by them, despite the assurances of their early release by the DAP,  a senior partner of the Selangor government.

The country must stop having such bigots as we have lived in harmony for so long. “Do not be overzealous in rushing to do things without any background check,” said Ting of JAIS.

He added that in Sarawak, we must be vigilant and never allow this to happen in our beautiful land, with our Peace and Harmony, total acceptance of our religious beliefs, our cultures, our practices and our ways of life..
