Celebrating Ponggal
Piasau Assemblyman, Datuk Sebastian Ting was invited by the Miri Hindu Temple to celebrate Ponggal as one of the Indian festival.
Ting thanking the organizer for inviting him to such an auspicious day said the term ‘Ponggal is a Tamil word which means ‘overflowing’ and this festival implies the overflowing of good wishes, affluence, wealth, and prosperity among the people and he wished those celebrating to be filled with all the good wishes.
During this festival, the crops like rice, sugarcane, turmeric etc are harvested in the agricultural field. On this occasion, the people dedicate thanks to the nature (The Sun God) for giving abundant agriculture crops to people in the universe.
In traditional, this harvest festival is celebrated a four-day-long, which falls according Tamil calendar in the month of Thai which is around mid-January. The four days celebration and rituals are called as Bhogi, Surya Pongal, Mattu Pongal and Kaanum Pongal.
