Datin Jennifer: back to square one
Sarawak united peoples’ party (SUPP) Datin Jennifer Chee William who is the Central Women’s Section regrets that the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) (Amendment) Bill 2016 was passed in the last Parliamentary Sitting without Section 88A which was intended to prevent unilateral conversion of minor children by anyone of the parent.
She said the woman’s section has been looking forward and see the lights of resolving the existing problems when Section 88A was proposed. Now that it had been removed, the problems of unilateral conversion that affected the future of children will still exist and it back to square one.
“Although we welcome the other amendments in this Law Reform Bill which has been a great move but dropping the Section 88A which is the highlight of the whole amendment is really disappointing. We strongly urge the Government to reconsider and look into this matter seriously and to include Section 88A into the Law Reform Act. In our opinion, we do not see it as contradicting the Federal Constitution. As we live in a multi-racial and multi-religious country, we cannot afford to ignore the persisted problems of unilateral child conversions of parties involved,” she added.
Chee said our children should have a clear and strong rights to freedom of religion. Religion is also a constitutional right of a person under our Federal Constitution.
