Press statement by Political Secretary Michael Tiang on A Malaysian Airlines Plane skidded off runway:
- After the chicken wings dumping incident in Sibu lately, a Malaysian Airlines flight skidded off the runway on last Saturday due to inclement weather was another black mark for Sibu. I thank God for that 61 passengers and 6 crew members on board on board were safe.
- The above incident caused the airport to be closed for 24 hours causing inconvenience to thousand passengers coming and going to Sibu airport and many had incurred unnecessary expenses as a result.
- Nevertheless, I am more disappointed with the fact that with these two unfortunate incidents happening in Sibu in such short span of time, our local ministers and the chairman of the Sibu Municipal Council had remained absolutely silent on both incidents. They are the leaders elected and appointed to represent Sibu people, and yet when a crisis arose there was no leadership.
- My another disappointment is with our Members of Parliament for Sibu and Lanang that this was not the first time an aircraft skidded off from the runway due to heavy downpour. A few years ago there was another commercial aircraft also skidded off due to bad weather. This kind of problem recurred at Sibu Airport last Saturday pointed to a fact that there is an urgent need for an auto landing system to be installed at Sibu airport. The said MPs could have voiced this matter in parliament.
- As a political secretary, I would personally write to the Minister of Transport Malaysia to fight for Sibu to have an auto landing system.
