Press statement from Wilfred Yap

Distinguised guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good Afternoon,

1.   It gives me great pleasure to join you this afternoon and represent Yb Lo Khere Chiang, Adun Batu Kitang and Chairman of MPP Chairman to grace your very meaningful DEEPAVALI CHARITY EVENT.

2.   Deepavali signifies the triumph of good over evil, light over dark. The slaying of the demon Narakusara by Lord Krishna is commonly cited as the origin of the Festival of Lights. But the values and principles that Hindus affirm when they commemorate Deepavali are of relevance to all peoples.  They have much in common with the values promoted by our other religions in Sarawak.

3.   Further, Deepavali has become an occasion for social togetherness, both within the Hindu community and between neighbours and friends of all races and religions in Sarawak. Friends from other races are often invited to the homes of Indian Sarawakians to share in the joyous atmosphere.

4.   This afternoon’s charity event is indeed one way in which we come together as a multi-ethnic community to celebrate the Festival of Lights where individuals from various ethnic groups from all religious background come together bearing  lights from peace and unity in their own unique way.

5.   However, Deepavali is not just a time for merry-making. It is also a time for us to remember the less fortunate around us, and to bring light into their lives. In an effort to bring the joy of the Festival of Lights to Sarawakians, I applaud and congratulate the Indian Association Kuching for making the effort to bring happiness to the less fortunate through this charity event in conjunction with Deepavali.

6.   I am given to understand that goodies such as biscuits, sugar, milk, noodles and milo will form part of the gifts given to low income families of all races. Token in the form of cash will also be given to bring some cheer to some 50 needy families. I take this opportunity to commend all the members of Indian Association Kuching who have supported this activity and look forward to their continued participation. The commitment of Indian Association Kuching to social and charity causes is exemplary.

7.   Lastly, I would like to congratulate the Organizing Committee for successfully organizing this Charity Event and I wish all Hindu Sarawakians a very Happy Deepavali.
