Kota Sentosa Assemblyman Urges Public to Avoid Illegal Online Loan Platforms Following Serious Threat Against Family
Kota Sentosa Assemblyman Wilfred Yap has called on the public to exercise extreme caution when seeking financial assistance online after meeting a distressed couple who sought his help following serious threats allegedly linked to an online loan taken by their son.
The parents informed Yap that they had received threats warning that their family home would be set on fire unless they paid RM25,000, allegedly to settle a loan of only RM500 that their son had obtained through an online lending platform.
Describing the incident as deeply disturbing and unacceptable, YB Wilfred Yap stressed that no family should have to live in fear because of criminal intimidation and extortion.
“I advised the family to remain calm, preserve all evidence, refrain from responding to the threats or making any payment to the perpetrators, and to cooperate fully with the authorities,” he said.
A police report has been lodged, and the Police are currently conducting investigations into the case.
Yap urged members of the public to be extremely vigilant when considering online loans, especially those advertised through social media, messaging applications, or websites promising instant approval with minimal documentation.
“Many illegal online lending syndicates deliberately lure borrowers with promises of fast cash and easy approval. However, once personal information has been obtained, some resort to harassment, intimidation, blackmail, and threats against borrowers and even their family members when repayments become disputed or delayed.”
He warned that what begins as a seemingly small loan can quickly escalate into demands for exorbitant sums through unlawful means.
“Never assume that borrowing a small amount carries only a small risk. Unscrupulous lenders may exploit your personal data, contact lists, photographs, and home address to exert pressure not only on you but also on your parents, spouse, relatives, friends, and employers. These criminal tactics are intended to create fear and force victims into making payments they may not legally owe.”
“Public awareness is our strongest defence. We must not allow criminal syndicates to prey on vulnerable individuals and terrorise innocent families. By reporting such crimes promptly and remaining vigilant, we can help protect our communities and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.”
