Political secretaries, Kho Teck Wan, Susan Clement and Kua Jack Seng lodge a police report over alleged defamatory social media Post today.
The political secretaries to the Premier of Sarawak were dismay over a social media post they claim contains defamatory and inflammatory content that could undermine racial harmony in the state.
Speaking at a press conference today on behalf of the group, Susan Clement said the report was lodged against a Facebook post uploaded by an account identified as “Nempy Jman” in the “NCR Sarawak” Facebook group.
She said that the post contained content that was potentially defamatory, misleading and capable of creating racial tension in Sarawak.
The report was made to enable the Royal Malaysia Police to conduct an independent, professional and fact based investigation into the matter.
Susan stressed that Sarawak is widely recognised for its peaceful and harmonious society, where people of different races, cultures and religions have long lived together in unity.
“As such, any statement or social media post that has the potential to create misunderstanding, hatred or division among the people should not be taken lightly,” she said.
She expressed hope that police would investigate whether the content was genuine, manipulated or contained elements that violated the law. If any offences were established, he said appropriate legal action should be taken in accordance with existing laws.
She also urged the public to exercise greater responsibility when using social media, advising users not to believe or share information without first verifying its authenticity and source.
“Freedom of speech comes with the responsibility to ensure that the information shared is accurate and does not cause harm to others,” she said.
He added that the group respected the right of all parties to a fair investigation and emphasised that they were not making any conclusions regarding the guilt of any individual.
“The matter should be left entirely to the authorities to determine the facts and take any appropriate action in accordance with the law,” she said.
Susan called on all Sarawakians to continue safeguarding the state’s spirit of unity, mutual respect and harmony by rejecting any attempts that could disrupt social cohesion.
“Let us protect our unity, uphold the truth and allow the legal process to determine the outcome,” she said.
