Chia Kah Furng Says Politicians Must Show Maturity
SUPP Piasau Branch Youth Deputy Secretary Chia Kah Furng has called on politicians to demonstrate maturity, saying that minor mistakes such as the improper display of the national flag should not be sensationalised into political issues, as this only creates unnecessary conflict and division in the country.
He cited the recent incident in Penang where a national flag was accidentally hung upside down. Investigations confirmed it was merely a mistake, yet a short video clip triggered an overreaction that led to business closures, public anxiety, and a heavy police presence to maintain order.
“If one truly loves the nation, the right approach is to communicate with the people calmly and constructively, not to incite fear. For example, when I see the Sarawak flag displayed incorrectly, I would politely remind the shop owner, ‘The black colour should be on top,’ and they would naturally make the correction. That is the mature way to handle it,” Chia said.
He stressed that if someone deliberately burns, insults, or defames the national flag, stern action must be taken to defend national dignity. However, when genuine mistakes are blown out of proportion for political mileage, it not only unsettles the public but also leaves foreign visitors puzzled and even amused by the country’s politics.
Chia criticised certain West Malaysian politicians who often exploit racial issues or flag-related incidents as propaganda to project themselves as “heroes.” He described such behaviour as shameful and damaging to the nation’s image.
“Malaysia is a diverse and inclusive country, and the Department of National Unity has consistently promoted racial harmony. Unfortunately, some politicians act in ways that go against this spirit, which is very disappointing. In contrast, Sarawak has long upheld cooperation among communities and maintained social harmony while driving development forward. That is what real political maturity looks like,” he remarked.
He added that hanging a flag wrongly is a small issue that does not warrant unnecessary drama. Politicians, entrusted with influence and responsibility, should focus on constructive nation-building rather than creating divisions.
“People are human; with more understanding and friendship, gentle reminders and education are far more effective than using heavy-handed measures,” Chia said.
He urged politicians not to sacrifice the nation’s image or undermine unity and harmony merely to gain political attention or personal advantage.
