New Access Road To Southern Zone Of KIA

Kota Sentosa State Assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin has provided an update on the construction progress of the access road to the southern zone of the Kuching International Airport saying that the project is now 95% complete.

According to Yap, the update was based on the latest briefing he received from Public Works Department (JKR) Kuching Division Engineer Ir. Wang Say Kwang during a meeting held on 2 July.

“As of 25 June 2025, the physical progress of the access road project has reached 95%,” said Yap. “The remaining works, which include road widening, bridge approach construction, and electrical system installation, are on track to be completed by the end of July.”

Among the final stages of work are 300 metres of road widening at the Road A/D junction, scheduled for completion by 7 July, 750 metres of road base construction along Road A (Sungai Kuap Bridge Approaches), targeted for 21 July; and installation and energising of street lighting, a substation, and traffic lights, expected to conclude by 31 July following Sarawak Energy Berhad’s (SEB) platform verification.

Yap also highlighted a major component of the project involving the relocation and upgrading of the Underpass Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) system. This includes raising 13 rows of AGL poles along the aircraft approach path to meet stringent aviation safety requirements.

“This aspect of the project required clearances from Malaysia Airports Sdn Bhd (MASB), the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) Kuching Office, and CAAM’s Air Navigation Services & Aerodrome (ANSA) Division in Kuala Lumpur,” he explained.

He noted that the final regulatory approval from CAAM ANSA was received on 1 July 2025, allowing the contractor to move forward with the remaining AGL works. The contractor is expected to need approximately one month to complete this phase.

However, he stated that the access road will only be opened to the public after a mandatory Flight Testing Window scheduled from 21 to 26 September 2025.

“This is to ensure all airfield safety systems are fully operational and certified before public access is allowed,” he said. “I have asked JKR to closely supervise the contractor to ensure timely completion of all outstanding works now that all necessary approvals have been secured.”

Yap also called on the public to remain patient and understanding during this final stage.

“These final steps are essential to ensure aviation and public safety. Our shared goal is to open this vital infrastructure safely by the end of September 2025,” he said.

He concluded by expressing appreciation to JKR, the contractor, and all involved agencies for their cooperation and dedication toward delivering a project that will benefit the people of Kuching and Sarawak.
