Press release from Michael Tiang

Starting from this coming Friday, the recently formed special task force by the national registration department would be setting up service counters for 3 days at Sibujaya’s community hall to assist indigenous people on “stateless” identity and citizenship issues.

Michael Tiang, The political secretary for the Chief minister’s Office today released a press statement to notify the public that the said service counters by the special task force would be opened from 8am to 5pm from this Friday to Sunday (21-23/10/2016).

Tiang said that particularly the rural areas in Sarawak there are many indigenous people without proof of their birth. With the ever increasing population, the number of such cases are growing too.

Tiang also informed that those who are in possession with proof of birth but are still with stateless status, they have to bring with them a duplicate copy of their parents’ identity card, their marriage certificate and the death certificates of their grandparents to support their application for citizenship. As for those who are without proof of birth, they may need certification from their community leaders or Penghulus for such applications.

Tiang also added that although the special task force is focusing on indigenous people on such matters, Tiang urged that whoever are having issues on national registration or citizenship, are also welcomed to seek assistance from the special task force at Sibujaya, this weekend.
