Media Release by Adam Yii – SUPP Publicity and Information Secretary on 11th State Election
The upcoming state election for Sarawakians is very important and crucial for Sarawakians. Our Sarawak Barisan National (BN) headed by our Chief Minister, YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem is leading all the local based BN parties to defend and extend Sarawak’s sovereignty.
All Sarawakians should support our local BN parties to achieve a clean, fair and progressive Sarawak government. It is clearly going to be a battle against West Malaysian political parties with Peninsular based vested interests.
SUPP as a local based party has made its stance very clear, that we must listen to the demands of the people, act on the feelings and aspirations of the people. This is especially true with regards to the 18 points in the Malaysia Agreement. These 18 points were intended to safeguard the interests of Sarawakians and hence should not be ignored or diluted.
SUPP at its recently held Annual Delegates Conference and Central Committee Meeting unanimously approved resolutions focusing on Sarawak’s sovereignty without any compromise.
SUPP also fully acknowledges and supports the repeated demands by the people in recent years for more autonomy. It has been more the 50 years after the formation of Malaysia and the spirit and legal obligations in the Malaysia Agreement have not been fulfilled. The rights and benefits of Sarawakians must be claimed back. They must be fully restored.
We in SUPP have pledged to campaign and fight at all levels; grassroots, political and governmental for Sarawak’s autonomy and rights.
YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem has the courage on many occasions to very vocally demand from the federal Government for more sovereignty. SUPP is fully with him at the forefront demanding the same without fear to fight for the interests of Sarawakians.
Sarawak BN has resolved to fight for all the rights due to Sarawakians and submitted them to the federal government. The Federal Government has so far responded positively and together with the State Government has set up a Committee led by the Secretary of State to systematically look at specific areas to increase the autonomy. The people of Sarawak are eagerly awaiting the positive outcome from these negotiations.
A Sarawak Barisan National victory in all seats in the upcoming elections will ensure the smooth transfer of sovereignty to Sarawak. However, a less then very strong support for the State Barisan National will indicate to the federal government a lack of support for sovereignty by Sarawakians. Our state government will not be able to negotiate from a position of strength. We as Sarawakians must all rally together.
We have also heard the voice of people on various other issues. So in the coming state elections, in addition to autonomy we will focus on some core issues, namely, taxation, education, oil and gas, immigration, religion, natural resources, fair trade, sovereignty of the federal departments in Sarawak. These are all issues close to the heart of Sarawakians.
We believe that it is only through civilised political negotiations we can step by step convince the federal government to transfer sovereignty to Sarawakians. The West Malaysian based DAP lack the ability, organisational skill or desire to execute such a plan. The PR alliance has already fallen apart and been buried.
Sarawakians must wake up to the fact that the West Malaysian based political parties are desperately trying to discredit our Chief Minister’s efforts so that we cannot achieve empowerment and autonomy status. The only solution to ensure that we Sarawakians can achieve our aim and dream of full autonomy is to be fully committed to give full support to all our local based Sarawak BN component parties.
