Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian hands over allocations to schools
Deputy Premier, who is also Batu Kawa assemblyman Datuk Amar Sim Kui Hian has encouraged teachers to provide students with knowledge about Sarawak beyond what is found in textbooks, in order to help the Sarawak Government strengthen a deeper and more confident sense of nation building among its people.
He said some important aspects of Sarawak’s history, identity and modern development may not be included in existing textbooks, but this should not prevent educators from sharing such knowledge with younger generations, especially students.
“The process of Malaysia’s formation, Sarawak’s position within Malaysia, what constitutes the Malaysia Agreement, which aspects of Sarawak’s founding rights are non negotiable, as well as Sarawak’s recent development achievements and future direction are all important areas of knowledge for students,” he said.
Sim made the remarks after visiting schools in his constituency and presenting education allocations to Chinese primary schools, national primary schools, national secondary schools and independent Chinese secondary schools.
He pointed out that the coverage of Sarawak’s history and related matters in current Malaysian textbooks is very limited, and teachers can play an important role in supplementing students’ understanding.
Sim said the Sarawak Government places great importance on education and regards Chinese primary schools and independent Chinese secondary schools as important components of the education system. Over the years, the state government has provided financial assistance and even land for Chinese primary schools.
“The Sarawak Government also provides annual allocations to independent Chinese secondary schools. Since 2014, the cumulative annual allocations have reached RM102 million, reflecting the state government’s commitment to treating all communities fairly and ensuring that no group’s education is neglected,” he said.
He added that the Sarawak Government has also invested heavily in implementing free tertiary education to ensure that every student has the opportunity to pursue higher education. He expressed hope that teachers would continue to nurture students so they can contribute to Sarawak’s future development and nation building efforts.
Meanwhile, Sim revealed that from 2016 to 2025, he had allocated RM13 million to schools within his constituency.
