Sarawak Strengthens Push to Become Regional Medical Tourism Hub
Sarawak aims to solidify its position as a regional medical tourism and wellness hub by drawing more private investment and boosting public confidence in its healthcare system, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
Dr Sim, who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, said healthcare is both an economic driver and an essential part of nation-building.
“The world is spending more on healthcare as we age, and even young people are falling sick,” he said at the launch of the International Medical Tourism Conference 2025 (IMTC2025) here yesterday.
He said Sarawak’s private healthcare sector is expanding rapidly, with major projects such as IHH Gleneagles and another specialist hospital in The NorthBank Kuching, as well as the doubling of Borneo Medical Centre’s capacity.
“At most private hospitals, 40 to 50 per cent of patients are non-Sarawakians, showing confidence in our doctors, nurses, and paramedics,” he added.
Describing healthcare as a sustainable sector with long-term growth potential, Dr Sim said it also creates opportunities in education and training.
He added that Sarawak’s ecotourism offerings complement its healthcare appeal, allowing patients to recuperate in serene surroundings while families enjoy leisure activities.
