Miri to host 13th International deep sea fishing tournament in May 2025

The highly anticipated 13th Miri City International Deep Sea Fishing Tournament (MCIDSFT) is set to take place from May 20 to May 24, 2025, marking its grand return after a four-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating that it will help position Miri as a premier destination for deep-sea fishing.

“This tournament is more than just a competition; it is an opportunity to showcase Miri’s rich marine biodiversity, strengthen our local tourism sector, and foster camaraderie among anglers from various regions,” Ting said.

He said they expected to attract around 100 participants, including international anglers from China, Singapore, Brunei, and other parts of Malaysia.

The event will officially commence with a flag-off ceremony on May 20, 2025, at 9 AM at Miri Marina Jetty, officiated by him.

Participants will return on May 24, with the prize-giving ceremony taking place at Marina Bay Jetty at 11 am, graced by Sarawak’s Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The tournament, which initially started as the Miri Deep Sea Fishing Competition from 1996 to 2006, has evolved into an international event since 2007, drawing global attention, particularly from Chinese and Singaporean anglers. Organizers are optimistic that the 2025 edition will further boost the local economy, benefiting industries such as fishing equipment suppliers and tourism-related businesses.

“The return of this event is a testament to Miri’s growing reputation as a top fishing destination. We hope it will continue to attract both seasoned and new anglers while supporting our local communities,” Ting added.

With its rich history and growing international appeal, the MCIDSFT 2025 promises to be a thrilling event for fishing enthusiasts and a significant boost for Miri’s tourism industry.
