People’s safety comes first, says Sebastian Ting
Sarawak United Peoples’ Party welcomes and thanks the Agong for his care and concern over the safety and lives of Sarawakians as in the next six months, there will be no election issues and the Sarawak government can continue to focus on fighting the epidemic and reviving the economy, said party Secretary General, Datuk Sebastian Ting.
“We have always emphasized that fighting the epidemic is always the top priority under the COVID-19 pandemic. Saving human lives is more important than anything else. We cannot let more lives of our dear fellow Sarawakians being killed by COVID-19. That is painful and a tragedy to any family, ” he said.
In a Federal Gazette released on Friday (July 30) night on the proclamation of emergency for Sarawak, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong proclaimed that a grave emergency exists and that the proclamation must cover the entire state from Aug 2, 2021 to Feb 2, 2022. Thus the Sarawak election will not be held during this period.
Ting pointed out that Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari also constantly emphasized that the most important task of fighting the epidemic at the moment is to be united and stop playing politics to score political points for the elections. GPS is committed to “Sarawak First” that prioritizes Sarawak and treasure the lives of Sarawak people.
“We believe that the top priority now is to ensure that the epidemic is improved and vigorously promote economic recovery, so that the people of Sarawak can restore their livelihoods and return to their original days. This is what the people of Sarawak are eagerly looking forward to and it is also what SUPP wants to see most. Our leaders and party members from all over the state are willing to work with the people through the difficult times, extend a helping hand and get out of the difficult situation together. Especially when the mutant virus is still spreading within Sarawak, the highest vigilance must be maintained at present to stop the spread of the mutant virus to more areas. The extension of the state of emergency in Sarawak will allow the relevant authorities to concentrate on the anti-epidemic task which will be fully supported by the Sarawak government and the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC)”.
He believed that only when the epidemic is fully controlled and the situation is truly safe, can Sarawak then consider for elections be held and the government’s entrustment is returned to the people of Sarawak so that voters can exercise their power to elect a new government. Under a democratic system, elections are certainly important and sacred procedure but the safety of the people must be the top priority in everything.
