Kho Teck Wan hopes that State election can be delayed

With the deadline of emergency ordinance approaching, the impending Sarawak election is a hot topic debated by politicians and fellow Sarawakian.

SUPP Central Women Section Chairman Kho Teck Wan is in the opinion that the state election should be held on a later date, and urged the Yang Di-Pertua Agong to grant special extension to the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly so the state government can continue to function until COVID-19 cases are under control.

Kho stressed that not only politicians but all levels of our society in Sarawak should focus on 3 most important things for now, which are saving lives, get vaccinated and economic recovery; instead of elections.

We have many other obvious reasons why state elections should be delayed:

Kuching’s COVID-19 daily cases are at an all time high, coupled with the highly infectious Delta variant, any election campaign without observing SOPs is a cluster in the making.

We are entering into the 3rd week of Phase 2 recovery plan. Most businesses are allowed to operate with only 50% workforce capacity. Let’s allow the market a period of recovery before the election is held.

“I also would like to urge the Election Commission to formulate the most stringent SOPs for election. Lower daily COVID-19 cases should not be the reason to loosen any SOPs for election.

Currently 58% of Sarawak’s adult population is fully vaccinated. We should focus our efforts on achieving at least 80% of the population fully vaccinated. Vaccines may not prevent one from getting infected by COVID-19, however statistics show that vaccines reduce severe cases and death rate due to COVID-19. It also prevents the collapse of our healthcare system,” she said.

She hoped that Yang Di Pertuan Agong would consider the circumstances in Sarawak and give special extension so Sarawak can continue to focus on what is more important right now, which are saving life, get vaccinated and economic recovery.
