Sebastian Ting helps a stateless boy obtain citizenship
Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Sarawak Datuk Sebastian Ting handed over the documents to Jack Chin during a simple ceremony at the Piasau State Constituency Service Centre recently.
Jack was born to a Malaysian father and an Indonesian mother who failed to get proper documents for him.
Ting who is also Piasau state assemblyman said the family first approached him in 2017, seeking help in validating the boy’s citizenship status and Piasau SUPP branch helped out by providing several letters of support to verify Jack being born in Sarawak.
A letter of citizenship was issued in November last year but due to covid 19 pandemic, the family who stayed at Batu Niah were not able to travel to get the documents.
Ting said he appealed for the letter to be sent over to Miri and finally, it arrived at the Immigration office in UTC Miri,”he added that being stateless, a person can live in a limbo and it would be very difficult for him to continue life as he did not have proper documents to get by or to owe anything in future.
He expressed gladness that Jack can now go to secondary school and college with no fears as he will be issued proper documents.
