SUPP has always has Sarawak’s interest at heart, says Dr Sim Kui Hian
The Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) joins our beloved Sarawakians who have Sarawak’s best interests at heart to welcome Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s open statement declared “Sarawak is not a state; it is a ‘wilayah’ (region)said Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian .”
Saying that it is a meaningful and significant step towards our target to achieve the constitutional status of Sarawak as one of the three regions of Malaysia as enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), it looks like the light at the end of the tunnel when Prime Minister openly declared that Thursday .
Yet it merely signifies a turning point, just a new beginning of our journey to settle various long-pending issues of MA63 with the Federal Government. To proceed on our mission, to strive for our goal, we need our beloved Sarawakians to stand together and be prepared for the arduous journey. We should not forget our “roots of Sarawak”.Sarawak is not greedy, it claims for the right and interests it reserves and been entitled under MA63, it’s glad to notice that the prime minister has just assured us that the claims would be considered fairly and equitably in accordance with the Federal Constitution and the spirit of MA63, ” he added.
Any amendment, he explained, to be made on the Federal Constitution, the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government at present would not be able to deliver without the collective support by majority of the members of Parliament.
SUPP, he stated, hereby officially suggested that, if the proposed amendment of the article 160 of the Federal Constitution couldn’t be completed prior to the next General Election, all parties which decide to join the race should for the sake of Sarawak’s interest, declare their stands plainly and distinctly via their electoral manifestos, to confirm whether they agree or disagree with Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) proposal to review the MA63 and amend the Article 160 of the Federal Constitution. This is to ensure that the interpretation of the Federation of Malaysia will eventually in congruence with the Malaysia Agreement 1963, not to mean the federation established under the Federation of Malaya Agreement 1957.
“As for those intent to contest in Sarawak, the parties as well as the individual candidates should do the same, besides that, they have to pledge to fellow Sarawakians, tell our people what are they going to atone for any possible breach of trust later. To Sarawak especially, such assurance for election pledges is important in view of too many electoral promises had been breached by political parties and their candidates in recent years. Pakatan Harapan is infamous for treating their pledges made to Sarawak as most a handsome but void blank cheque, many of their promises were MA63 related, they talked big and shouted loud about the constitutional rights and resources of Sarawakians in election campaign, yet the fact-record shown that they have neglected Sarawak interests during their stint at the federal government.
The previous PH government has in April 2019 tabled a constitutional amendment bill on the status of Sabah and Sarawak, but it was a “political ploy”, MA63 was neither touched nor mentioned. To GPS, “the proposed amendment by the PH government was at best a cosmetic change or political ploy, to show that PH has fulfilled its election manifesto……we want something more substantive, solid and founded on the spirit of MA63.”
Dr Sim added that since PH did not correct the mistake made in the 1976 constitutional amendment, MPs of GPS refused to support the bill, PH Federal Government didn’t accept GPS’s counter-proposal, so the situation was deadlocked.
The farce was more to score political points for PH, it discarded the spirit of MA63, therefore the bill failed.
The difference was obvious, GPS cares for Sarawak, it survives and grows because it has “roots of Sarawak”!
SUPP will be with our beloved Sarawakians to strive for the benefits of Sarawak, we are anchored by our “roots of Sarawak”, we never forget our roots because our roots will remind us never to forget the people, family, relationships, friends, they helped us all along the way and will always be there for all of us.
“We shall never forget where you come from. Our “roots of Sarawak” are what supporting us and make us stronger. They hold us up.Our Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg just told PM that Sarawak will continue to “look after itself”, “Sarawak, as an extended family in Malaysia, we are going to look after ourselves because we know what we need, and we can settle our problems within our family. If our family is happy, then the larger family Malaysia will also be happy. We in Sarawak know how to settle issues in our own family and let this way be maintained, because only Sarawakians know best about Sarawak, so we have to look after ourselves, he said.”
He added that it is true that we want to preserve and maintain our political autonomy to look after ourselves, we know what we need and best about Sarawak, we don’t have to shout “’Solidarity with so and so” of Malaya, we don’t even bother to look at someone who flew all the way from KL and just to make an arrogant but stupid accusation that Sarawak will go bankrupt in three years’ time.
